IN LOVING MEMORY OF MR JOHN MASUKU
MR JOHN MASUKU
It was with profound sadness that the Board of Directors and staff of the Barbara Clara Makhalisa Nkala Literary Trust (BCMNLT) announced the passing of our esteemed colleague and Chairperson of the Board, John Masuku, who died on February 13, 2026, at the age of 71.
Mr John Masuku served on our Board since 2020, providing invaluable strategic guidance, wisdom, and leadership. As Chair of the Board and member of the Literary Committee, he was instrumental in establishing and fostering strategic partnerships. Masuku’s commitment to our organisation’s growth and his mentorship will leave a lasting legacy. He leaves the Trust and his industry with his publication, JM Archives – Memoirs of A Cross Generational Zimbabwean Broadcaster, which showcases his journey in the broadcasting and media industry. The memoirs draw on his personal and professional experiences, as well as insights from family members who were involved in broadcasting dating as far back as the 1950s. This is a must read for those in the industry and students studying towards this profession and career.
John Masuku was a veteran journalist with several decades of career. He was a dedicated journalist and mentor who worked for several prominent public and private media houses. John Masuku proudly served his country as a dedicated and passionate journalist and media practitioner. He was a professional journalist and media practitioner who enjoyed capturing and documenting every moment as well as discussing those issues which inform, educate, influence, inspire, direct and shape policy, practice and thought.
Driven by an endless thirst for knowledge, Masuku was a lifelong learner, a devoted journalist and media practitioner. He had a passion for discovering new things and had an unswerving pursuit of truth. This spirit which characterised his life translated into lessons he earnestly imparted onto those around him. His ability to make learning fun and meaningful left a lasting impact as several of his former journalism and media students followed in his footsteps, becoming seasoned and exceptional journalists and media practitioners because of the joy he brought to their training experience.
Among the many milestones of his well-lived life, Masuku marked the year 2018 with immense pride. He became the Spokesperson of the Motlanthe Commission, a feat that underscored his determination and tenacity. In October 2022, Masuku recorded another milestone in his career, following his appointment as the International Campaign Coordinator for UNESCO’s World Radio Day, a position which he held until the time of his death.
Masuku’s legacy of humour, perseverance, and learning will be carried forward by those who had the privilege of knowing him. His remarkable life will forever be an inspiration, a testament to the power of an indomitable spirit enthused with curiosity and resilience.
He was a devoted member of the Anglican Church and found joy in using his marketplace skills and talent in capturing every moment of the Church’s activities.
John Masuku touched the lives of everyone who had the honour of knowing him. His selflessness, warmth, and generous spirit will be remembered forever. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication and passion for what one does. He passed away in the early hours of the 2026 World Radio Day just after posting content commemorating this day: a testimony of his unwavering dedication and commitment to the industry. He was a highly acclaimed journalist who received multiple accolades and recognitions for his sterling work.
John, as Ms Dumi Nkala passionately called him: and Godlwayo, as he also was called by the Godlwayo members in our Board meetings was passionate, warm, and kind. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
Hamba kahle Godlwayo omuhle! Ukulwile ukulwa okuhle. Qotho, ziyahamba izinsizwa, kosala izibongo.
